A fine 2018 il fatturato globale del settore cosmetico si approssima agli 11,2 miliardi di euro (+2%), mentre le previsioni per l'anno in corso indicano una crescita ulteriore del 2,6%.
A determinare questo andamento hanno contribuito il fatturato interno, con un trend positivo di poco meno di un punto percentuale e soprattutto le esportazioni in crescita del 3,5% nel 2018 per un valore di 4.800 milioni di euro.

Ancora una volta l'evoluzione dell'export ha inciso significativamente sulla bilancia commerciale, che supera i 2.700 milioni di euro
Uno sguardo alla domanda di cosmetici in Italia a fine 2018 ne conferma l'anticiclicità, seppur a ritmi più rallentati rispetto agli ultimi esercizi (+0,5%) per un valore poco superiore ai 10.100 milioni di euro. Concorre a questo risultato la tenuta dei canali professionali, quali saloni di acconciatura e centri estetici, che hanno chiuso il 2018 in crescita dello 0,5%.
Sono marginali, ma numericamente importanti, gli aumenti della grande distribuzione (+0,5%) e della profumeria (+1,2%), che rispettivamente si attestano al primo e al secondo posto nelle vendite di cosmetici in Italia.

L'e-commerce, per la prima volta analizzato separatamente dal Centro Studi, continua a segnare trend superiori agli altri canali con una crescita stimata del 10%. Le vendite dirette precedentemente abbinate a questo valore segnalano invece una contrazione del 2% a fine 2018.
Deboli segnali di incertezza provengono dal canale farmacia, che ha chiuso il 2018 con un calo dell'1%; anche nelle erboristeria rallenta l'andamento dei consumi, sebbene rimangano positivi i valori di trend (+0,2%).
Infine, la produzione cosmetica contoterzi, che si pone a monte della filiera produttiva e trasversale rispetto agli altri canali, registra una crescita del 4% per il 2018 e si stima un ulteriore rialzo del 6% per il primo semestre del 2019.
